As tensions continue to rise between the United States and North Korea over their nuclear weapons testing I thought now would be a great time to remind everyone about the importance of being prepared for nuclear fallout. Although most average middle class Americans can’t afford to go out and buy the best chemical protection suit with built in respirator there are some reasonable, cheap alternatives we can use to protect ourselves.

Keep in mind that if a nuclear disaster were to occur most of the protective gear would be bought out in a matter of minutes so it’s important to prepare yourself now so that it’s ready when you need it.  I remember when the earthquake hit Fukushima back in 2011 we sold out our supply of anti-radiation tablets in under an hour, prompting me to write an entire article about alternatives to potassium iodide.

Here is a list of some excellent survival gear that would be extremely helpful in a nuclear fallout situation.

In a perfect world we would have plenty of warning time and ample opportunity to seek out shelter before nuclear fallout made it to our region.  Like the characters in the CBS show “Jericho” we’d have underground bomb shelters on our farms or the city hall would have a shelter large enough to house the entire town.  We would be able to stay put until the nuclear threat had passed.

Plastic Sheeting

For those who may not have a bomb shelter or basement for sheltering in place, the next best option will be to secure your home as best as possible.  Since radiation can leak through windows and doors, cracks, etc.  it’s a great idea to have plenty of heavy duty plastic sheeting and duct tape on hand so that you can secure your home as best as possible.  The goal is to make your residence as air-tight as possible.

Editors Update: North Korea Nuclear Crisis

With talk of WW3 and nuclear strikes from North Korea all over the news this week I really started thinking about how important it is to make sure we have sufficient supplies on hand to protect our families. This kind of thing is not easy to find; if a warning were issued the nuclear fallout was scheduled to hit your area in a matter of hours or even days everyone would be scrambling to make sure they have their preparations in order. Most regular retail stores do not carry potassium iodide or anti-radiation tablets. Some specialty health food stores, survival stores and possibly camping supply stores may carry them but their inventory would run out quickly in the face of a nuclear fallout threat.

That’s why I went ahead and ordered a couple of extra bottles yesterday. I figure it never hurts to have extra on-hand for the neighbors or whoever might need them since obviously I don’t need them all for myself.

Sources are reporting that local health food stores have been  completely wiped out of all potassium iodide tablets and  many suppliers are sold out as well.  As word of the potential nuclear war has spread, people have been emptying the shelves of potassium iodide and alternative solutions.

After making some calls, I did not find any potassium iodide tablets for sale locally. However, I did end up with some good advice on alternative therapies and even some suggestions that the potassium iodide tablets may not work for the type of radiation we would experience from a fallout. The CDC has a great article with all the facts on potassium iodide, what exactly it does inside the body and what it can and can not protect you from. However there are also some rumors flying around the web that there are some serious side affects from taking this drug, ironically one of them is cancer – the exact thing it’s supposed to prevent.  Be sure to do your research and make an informed decision on your purchase.

There are still a few places left to order Potassium Iodide tablets online. But I wouldn’t doubt if they’re quickly on their way to being sold out as well.

I like to take a multi-pronged approach when it comes to survival so here’s what I found out in case you’re looking for a little more assurance against radiation poisoning.

Kelp

Several sources suggest that Kelp may be used to treat the affects of radiation on the body. Many “green foods” such as kelp, seaweed, wheat grass or any other source of chlorophyll will have similar properties.

There are so many underground bunkers we could explore, but we chose to focus on the largest and most significant underground facilities that we know of. Most underground bunkers that become public end up being abandoned, so most if not all of these locations won’t be the primary bunkers for government leaders when the SHTF. But we can at least get an idea of the size, precision and vastness of these subterranean cities and the networks that connect them. Let’s take a look a look at 10 very impressive doomsday bunkers.

1. Mount Weather

Mount Weather, also known as the “Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center” is described as a civilian command facility in the heart of Virginia. It is also used as the center of operations for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). This site is known to be a major relocation site, which would serve as one primary location for the Continuity of Operations Plan. If the President or FEMA were to make an announcement over the Emergency Alert System, it would likely come from here.

Interesting Fact
This location was discovered when TWA Flight 514, crashed into Mount Weath on Dec. 1st 1974.

2. Cheyenne Mountain

The famed Cheyenne Mountain Complex has been the subject of much curiosity. It is located close to Colorado Springs, Colorado and situated deep in 2000 feet of granite. This facility was designed to withstand a 5 megaton nuclear explosion up to 1.7 miles away. Commissioned at the height of the Cold War, Cheyenne Mountain became one of the nations largest underground facilities and became headquarters for NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) in 1966, as well as U.S. Strategic Command, U.S. Air Force Space Command and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) in later years. This facility was at one time critical to to aerospace warning and control during missile or air attacks against North America. While still in use as an alternate command facility, it is likely that since this complex is so well known it will no longer be used in a significant way in the future.      

Interesting Fact Cheyenne Mountain is commonly seen in fiction, seen in such works as Terminator 3, War Games, Stargate and Jeremiah (tv series).

3. Raven Rock Mountain Complex

Raven Rock’s construction began in 1950, when President Harry S. Truman approved the construction of this facility. It was meant for use as a relocation site for the pentagon staff (up to 3000 people). Over 1.5 million cubic yards of granite rock were blasted out during the construction period of only 10 months. There were five, 3 story buildings originally built in the complex. The complex has roughly 700,000 square feet of usable space. Located along the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, the Raven Rock Mountain Complex is full is interesting amenities. While it started with very simple facilities it now includes: several underground reservoirs, a high-tech ventilation system, fire department, dental clinic, medical clinic, dining facility, post office, snack bar, dormitories, chapel, barber shop, fitness center and even, you guessed it, a Starbucks.

Interesting Fact Raven Rock is shown the video game “Fallout 3” as being the east-coast headquarters for a fragmented government group know as “the enclave”. It is also the location of a self-aware super computer known as “ZAX”.

4. Moscow Metro – Underground Cities and Rail Lines

Unknown to most traveling the subways of Moscow, there is something more down there than just a basic transit system. There is a large subterranean system of secrets trains and bunkers beneath Moscow, most of which was built by Stalin during the Cold war (code named D-6). What we know about this facility is very little, mostly because there are few (if any) first hand accounts of a secret metro’s existence. Interestingly, in 1991 the United States Department of Defense released a report saying this:

“The Soviets have constructed deep-underground both in urban Moscow and outside the city. These facilities are interconnected by a network of deep interconnected subway lines that provide a quick and secure means of evacuation for the leadership. The leadership can move from their peacetime offices through concealed entryways in protective quarters beneath the city. There are important deep-underground command posts in the Moscow area, one located at the Kremlin. Soviet press has noted the presence of an enormous underground leadership bunker adjacent to Moscow State University. These facilities are intended for the national command authority in wartime. They are estimated to be 200-300 meters deep, and can accommodate an estimated 10,000 people. A special subway line runs from some points in Moscow and possibly to the VIP terminal at Vnukovo Airfield(…)”

“Underground City” in Ramenki

Near Moscow State University, in the Ramenki district, there is a series of complex underground buildings. These facilities could supposedly hold up to 15,000 people, which is an unheard of amount of people compared to most government bunkers. They could also maintain this system for up to 30 years, which is again very unprecedented.

Interesting Fact
The Underground City is referred to as “Ramenki-43” by the general public. 43 is thought to be the address of one of the facility entrances.

5. Iron Mountain

This facility, while not officially recognized as a survival bunker, could easily be viewed as one. Taking up 10,000 square feet of space in a 1,000 acre limestone mine, the Iron Mountain storage facility is massive and rumored to be one of the most secure locations in the world. Records were stored here as early as 1954 but in 1998 a private company called Iron Mountain Incorporated purchased the old mine.

Today everything from social security records to bill gates private collection is stored here. All of the most important records will be stored in the refrigerated archive at a cool -4 degrees. Records stored in this way could be preserved for thousands of years.

There is speculation that this facility would double over as a relocation center for Americas private industry moguls. The mine includes a 5 engine fire department, power generators, de-humidification, refrigeration and air filtration systems, an underground lake with water purification, as well as high tech sprinklers, plumbing and wiring throughout.

Interesting Fact
Despite it’s sterling reputation, Iron Mountain has lost records on 3 occasions. Over a million records have been lost between the 3 accidents.

    The Power: The sulfur compounds that give garlic its pungent flavor can also lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, lower blood pressure and even reduce your risk of stomach and colon cancer.     The Power: Isoflavones, which may inhibit estrogen-promoted breast cancers, plus fiber for heart health and an impressive 9 grams of protein per half cup. A half-cup (cooked) has 115 calories, 0 fat and 8 grams of fiber. Isoflavones hold up through processing, so buy lentils canned, dried or already in soup. Take them to work, and you will have a protein packed lunch.
23. Peanuts
    The Power: Studies show that peanuts or other nuts (which contain mostly unsaturated “good” fat) can lower your heart-disease risk by over 20 percent. One ounce has 166 calories, 14 grams of fat and 2 grams of fiber. Keep a packet in your briefcase, gym bag or purse for a protein-packed post-workout nosh or an afternoon pick me up that will satisfy you until supper, or chop a few into a stir-fry for a Thai accent.     The Power: A half cup has more than 25 percent of your daily requirement of folate, which helps protect against heart disease and reduces the risk of birth defects. Get the plain kind and mix in your own fruit to keep calories and sugar down. If you are lactose intolerant, never fear — yogurt should not bother your tummy.

    The Power: Riboflavin (a.k.a. vitamin B2) is important for good vision and along with vitamin A might help improve eczema and allergies. Plus, you get calcium and vitamin D, too. One cup has 86 calories, 0 fat and 0 fiber. If you are used to high fat milk, don’t go cold turkey; instead, mix the two together at first. Trust this fact: In a week or two you won’t miss it!
    Seafood
27. Shellfish (Clams, Mussels)
